  • P&G Latin America is a division of the P&G Company.
  • In 1987, Mr. Montoya initiated and led the relocation of the P&G Latin America hedquarters from Cincinnati, Ohio, to Caracas, Venezuela.  That event marked the beginning of a significant expansion of the P&G business in Latin America.
  • From essentially a small 3-category, 4-country operation, with $400 million sales in 1985, P&G’s business grew during the following 15 years to $3.5 billion annual sales, subsidiaries in 12 countries, business presence in all 23 countries and 12 consumer goods categories.
  • The growth came from grassroots organic development of P&G categories as well as 14 regional acquisitions of family-owned businesses, which served as base to introduce P&G own brands.
  • Profits increased 20-fold from 1985 to 2004.
  • The Latin America organization developed into a full-fledged, self-sufficient operation, all developed from university entry level (as per P&G’s promotion-from-within policy).
From an organization fully dependent on ex-patriate General Managers in 1985, Latin America moved to 100% Latin management in 1995 and to export talent beginning in 1999.  Today, over 300 Latins work outside the region in important executive positions in North America, Europe and Asia.
  • P&G’s Global Snacks and Beverages is a $3.5 billion business, including billion-dollar brands Folgers, the # 1 coffee in North America, and Pringles snack chips.
  • Following a major organization structure change of the P&G Company in 1999, Mr. Montoya was placed in charge of P&G’s Global Snacks & Beverages business, in addition to his then current responsibilities for all of P&G’s business in Latin America.
  • During Mr. Montoya’s tenure in charge of S&B (1999-2004), the sector underwent a major redirection to a) significantly improve the profit/margin contribution of S&B to the Company; b) consolidate the globalization of Pringles’ snack business; and c) focus the business towards strategic billion-dollar brands, divesting non-strategic businesses (including Crisco oil/shortening, Jif peanut butter and Sunny Delight juice drinks).
  • On apples-to-apples comparison, the Snacks and Beverages business grew an average 5% sales, 10% profits and 13% TSR per year from 1999 to 2004.
