YOA ACCESS-TO-EXCELLENCE PROGRAM
Music education combined with community outreach is the heart of one of the most rewarding aspects of YOA. YOA ACCESS-TO-EXCELLENCE PROGRAM specifically addresses this component of the orchestra's mission by facilitating outreach performance / teaching projects carried out by small groups of combined YOA Faculty and Musicians in underserved communities throughout the Hemisphere.
These 10-day programs offer unique opportunities for YOA musicians to interact with local communities in circumstances they could not imagine possible – in a small church outside Montevideo, at a community center in an impoverished neighborhood of Lima, in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, a public park for low-income families on the outskirts of São Paulo, a theater filled with New York public school students from South Bronx and Harlem, in the rural country-side of the Domican Republic.
“In Montevideo, Uruguay, I had the wonderful opportunity to give a trombone class to six young trombone players, all of whom were incredibly eager and excited to learn about their instruments. No one can ever know how much this meant to these children.” Christopher Burns, trombone, USA
In order prepare YOA musicians and faculty to most effectively carry out their role as musical ambassadors in diverse settings, all participants in YOA's annual full-orchestra Residency take part in leadership tutorials from music education and cultural specialists that instill them with the skills they will need as teaching artists. In addition to receiving language courses, YOA musicians gain hands-on experience conducting musical outreach through didactic community performances, workshops and master classes that involve the full-orchestra. Through this outreach experience with the full-orchestra, YOA musicians decelop the skills necessary to work in the chamber performing / teaching teams of 5 - 10 musicians that take part in Access-Excellence programs. Through these programs, YOA musicians not only train the young individuals they work with musically and artistically, but also communicate the discipline, commitment and sense of teamwork required to pursue a career in music.
"In the year 2003, I joined Youth Orchestra of the Americas and my life would never be the same again. YOA helped me to realize that I could live my dream." Isaac Casal, cello, Panamá
