Biography

Maia was born on May 16, 1986 in Saint Petersburg, Russia. She began to play violin and piano at the age of 5. After immigrating to Canada at the age of 14, Maia began studies with Yasha Milkis and soon won a spot in the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, with which she toured around Canada, Hong-Kong and Japan. Maia joined the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra in 2002, where she won the assistant concertmaster chair. She was also a winner of Toronto Music Competition in 2003, and took the 3rd prize for Canadian Music Competition 2004. In 2004 she played the Mendelssohn Concerto in d-minor and in 2005 performed Bach Double Concerto with Yasha Milkis with Etobicoke Philharmonic Orchestra. In the summer of 2005, Maia joined the Youth Orchestra of the Americas on a tour to Venezuela, Columbia and Argentina, where she was awarded a fellowship to join the orchestra for the two following summers on a tour to Europe in 2006 and Latin America in 2008. Maia is an active member of a Mexican ensemble Viva Mexico Mariachi in Toronto. In 2007 Maia came to Brazil, participating in the Festival de Musica de Santa Catarina and playing as Concertmaster in the Orquestra de Camara da Universidade de Sao Paulo. In the summer of 2007 Maia took part in National Academy Orchestra of Canada under the direction of Boris Brott. Maia is currently studying with Mayumi Seiler in the University of Toronto.
