Biography
Raul started his musical training at the age of 9 at the Escuela Experimental de Musica “Jorge Pena Hen” in his hometown of La Serena, Chile. In 1997, he was awarded a scholarship from American Field Service (AFS) to participate of a one-year study abroad program at Lower Merion High School. He later attended the Curtis Institute of Music and Temple University, from which he received a B.M. and M.M. respectively.
He is the recipient of scholarships from the Matinee Musical Club of Philadelphia, Zildjian Corporation and the Percussive Arts Society.
Raul attended the National Repertory Orchestra in Colorado and the New York String Orchestra Seminar. He participated of the Jeunesses Musicales World Youth Orchestra, Youth Orchestra of the Americas, Spoleto USA, and the Scheleswig-Holstein and Verbier Music Festivals. He has also performed with the Opera Company and Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, as well as, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Delaware, Honolulu, New World and Virginia Symphonies.
In 2001 Raul was featured as a soloist with the Youth Orchestra from the state of Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany in performances in Sala Ignacio Domeyko of the ULS and La Cruz de Coquimbo. He has also been featured at the Organization of American States (OEA) and the Embassy of Chile in Washington D.C.
Raul served at the faculty of Lincoln University and has been an active clinician, offering masterclasses and workshops in Brazil, China, Chile and Mexico. Since September of 2007, Raul serves as the Associate Principal Timpanist with the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra.
